New ARI Free Books to Teachers Program—We the Living
We would like to share with you the following message to ARI donors from Yaron Brook.
Dear ARI Contributor:
One of the most successful ARI initiatives in recent years has been our Free Books to Teachers program.
Since 2003, more than 1.8 million copies of Ayn Rand’s novels have been placed, free of charge, in classrooms across North America.
The program began with Anthem and The Fountainhead. In 2006-07 we began, on a limited basis, to offer Atlas Shrugged as well. Now more than 160,000 copies of Atlas Shrugged have been shipped to teachers.
This year, we began efforts to offer to educators free copies of We the Living, which is the only one of Ayn Rand’s novels we’ve not offered before. We already knew that there would be educator interest in teaching the novel, and that the theme would resonate with young readers and their teachers.
We are pleased to report that demand for We the Living has been tremendous. Our initial offering has thus far generated requests for far more than our supply—which was 20,000 copies—and has done so much more rapidly than we had anticipated!
While we are able to manage the majority of these requests with current resources, we anticipate that we have the opportunity to place at least another 30,000 copies of We the Living in classrooms over the next year. We estimate the cost of meeting this demand at roughly $180,000.
To achieve this objective, however, we need your help. Your contribution to the Ayn Rand Institute will allow us to meet the extraordinary demand for We the Living, and will ultimately allow us, of course, to offer young people the opportunity to read all four of Rand’s novels during their high school years.
The ongoing Free Books to Teachers program has become a cornerstone of ARI’s educational outreach efforts—which in turn is the foundation of our ongoing struggle to change the culture. Your support for the expansion of this program to include We the Living is greatly appreciated.
Many thanks for your consideration!
Sincerely,
Yaron Brook President and Executive Director
