Overview
Since 2002, the Ayn Rand Institute has offered free copies of Anthem and The Fountainhead to teachers all across North America, with some grade levels also eligible to receive Atlas Shrugged. We the Living was added in the fall of 2010. The program has been highly successful; in fact, to date more than 2.5 million copies of the novels have been sent to more than 45,000 teachers in 65,000 classrooms across the United States and Canada. Given an expected three-year lifespan of the books, we estimate that more than six million young people either have been, or soon will be, introduced to Ayn Rand’s books and ideas as a direct result of this program.

How the Program Works
A portion of contributions sent to ARI to help fund this program are used to send a promotional flyer offering free classroom sets of Anthem, The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged and We the Living to English and Language Arts teachers, department heads, and principals, as well as selected counselors and high school administrators in the U.S. We make this offer to both public and private high schools.
In response to ARI’s flyers, emails and online promotions, we receive requests for books from teachers who would like to assign the novels, but cannot do so for lack of funds to acquire the novels. Those educators who elect to participate in the program receive a classroom set of the novels, along with a teacher’s guide, lesson plans and information about ARI’s annual Anthem, Fountainhead, We the Living and Atlas Shrugged essay contests. We also offer teachers phone and e-mail support, as needed, to facilitate their teaching of the books in their classes.
