Setting Goals for Life and Happiness

by Dr. Edwin A. Locke

This talk shows why it is that in order to be happy, one must first believe that seeking happiness is a moral endeavor. Work or career and romantic love are the most important sources of happiness, so the focus will be on setting goals in those domains, though other domains will be briefly mentioned. Many goals are needed in both work and love, including developing genuine self-esteem, building character, gaining skills and education, finding work and/or a partner that you love, maintaining health, striving for excellence, making money and money management skills, acquiring communication and conflict resolution skills. The course examines what research on goal setting tells us about the goal attributes that are most effective and how to apply this knowledge to one’s life.
