IRVINE, CA--"'Let's roll!' was the first battle cry in the war, and all Americans immediately embraced its spirit as their own in the face of deadly peril. But does George Bush retain that spirit one year later?" asked Dr. Yaron Brook, executive director of the Ayn Rand Institute.

When the passengers on United flight 93 fought the terrorists for control of the plane, said Dr. Brook, "they did so without any doubts about their right to defend themselves and their free country. They did not look for outside permission or wonder if they had the approval of some U.N. security council. They were not a coalition of freedom lovers and freedom haters; they were a brotherhood, pledging to preserve their highest value--their own honorable lives."

"It is almost a year later," observed Dr. Brook, "and it is painfully obvious that President Bush has not understood what those ordinary passengers knew: self-defense means taking every action necessary to preserve your life and freedom. This is not the principle Mr. Bush followed in Afghanistan. He feared world disapproval over civilian casualties and so reined in the military, allowing Taliban and al Qaeda forces to flee to plot more American deaths. In the Middle East Mr. Bush does not assert America's unilateral right to defend itself; instead he appeases Arab nations and attempts to build coalitions which bar Israel, our only true ally there--while placating Palestinian terrorists by promising them a provisional state."

"This war cannot be won until Mr. Bush finds the self-esteem to proclaim the supreme value of America and the courage to defend this value--alone, if need be--without compromise and with the overwhelming force that our military is capable of."
