Faith-Based Initiative Immoral and Unconstitutional
By David Holcberg (April 10, 2003)
The faith-based initiative law passed by the U.S. Senate on Wednesday is immoral and unconstitutional.
It is immoral because it will appropriate money from taxpayers to promote religious beliefs they may disagree with. As Thomas Jefferson explained, "To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical."
It is unconstitutional because government financing of religious organizations violates the constitutional principle that the government "shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion."
