"This ridiculous law is the latest demonstration of the fact that environmentalists have absolutely no concern for the rights and interests of human beings," said Dr. Yaron Brook, executive director of the Ayn Rand Institute. "To them, the costs and inconvenience this law will impose on plastic bag manufacturers, grocery store owners, and shoppers are irrelevant. We must do whatever it takes to protect Mother Nature from the plastic bag menace, they say--no matter how much it hurts us.

"Observe that whether environmentalists are calling for restrictions on DDT, fossil fuels, or plastic bags, it is always human beings who lose, human welfare that is sacrificed, and human rights that are tossed aside as 'expendable.'

"What purpose are these endless sacrifices supposed to serve? The preservation of 'pristine' nature, say the environmentalists--of nature untouched by man, which, they declare, is intrinsically valuable. This means that human beings must suffer for the 'good' of rocks, weeds, and squid.

"It is long past time Americans realize that environmentalists are not working to achieve clean air and water--their goal is the destruction of human welfare for the sake of nature. We should reject their vicious agenda."
