Israel Must Abandon "Just War Theory"
July 24, 2006

Israel is being ordered by leaders around the world to obey "Just War Theory" in defending itself against Hezbollah's aggression. "But so-called Just War Theory is incompatible with an innocent nation's self-defense," said Dr. Yaron Brook, Executive Director of the Ayn Rand Institute.

"According to advocates of 'Just War Theory,' Israel must avoid killing Lebanese civilians, even when their deaths are necessary to protect Israel's safety. But Israel is the victim of a war initiated by Hezbollah, with the sanction of the Lebanese government and much of the Lebanese population. As the innocent party, Israel has the right and the obligation to its innocent citizens to kill as many civilians in Lebanon as necessary to defend itself. Any deaths of the truly innocent will be the moral responsibility, not of Israel, but of Hezbollah, the Lebanese government, and the complicit civilians."
