Diplomacy Encourages North Korea's Belligerence

IRVINE, CA—North Korea is apparently preparing to test-fire a missile with the ability to reach the continental United States, and it could well be a nuclear-capable missile. "This renewed belligerence is a consequence of engaging North Korea in diplomacy," said Dr. Yaron Brook, executive director of the Ayn Rand Institute.
 
"For decades America has led the West in appeasing North Korea, by paying it protection money not to develop nuclear weapons. Whenever the North was caught cheating on its promises--the West's response was more appeasement, more gifts and more concessions. And the North re-emerged each time with even greater belligerence.

"Such diplomacy rests on evading the moral character of North Korea. The United States and its allies must abandon this suicidal policy of appeasement."
