End All Tariffs Now
Sept 15, 2005

IRVINE, CA--In his recent address at the U.N. World Summit, President Bush said that the United States is "ready to eliminate all tariffs, subsidies, and other barriers to the free flow of goods and services as other nations do the same."

But why wait for other nations to "do the same"?

True, we should advocate for global free trade: all nations should eliminate their tariffs and subsidies. But by imposing our own tariffs, subsidies and quotas in response to the irrationalities of other nations, we lower our own standard of living. We deprive American citizens of the freedom to buy cheaper goods.

Leaving aside the case of enemy nations, if an American judges that it is in his self-interest to buy from a foreign producer, he should have the right to do so without restriction--and to pocket the savings.

Forcibly depriving Americans of the freedom to trade is not only bad economics; it is a violation of our right to life, liberty, property and the pursuit of happiness.
